KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 3): The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced three new Covid-19 clusters today, of which two were found in Kedah and one in Selangor, with a combined 16 confirmed infections.

The three clusters were Bah Lunas (four cases) and Bah Rose (eight) in Kedah, and the Jelok cluster in Selangor (four), according to MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pictured).

All of the 16 confirmed infections were Malaysians, he noted.

“The Bah Lunas cluster was detected in Kulim. The index case (case No. 11,471) is a Malaysian man, aged 35, who returned from a high-risk area — Sabah. He was tested positive on Sept 30 and admitted to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital,” said Noor Hisham at a media briefing today.

Prior to this, screening of close contacts had been conducted — on 112 individuals — with the four confirmed infections detected in the cluster so far.

As for the Bah Rose cluster in Kuala Muda, the index case (case No. 11,212) is a 48-year-old Malaysian man who had travelled to Sabah.

Up until noon today, some 477 individuals in the cluster had been screened. Eight individuals tested positive for the virus, including seven individuals in Kedah and one in Penang.

As for the Jelok cluster in Selangor, up until noon today, eight individuals had screened, of which four tested positive for the virus, while the remaining four were negative.

“The index case (Case No. 11,788) is a Malaysian man, aged 27, who tested positive through symptomatic screening conducted on Oct 1, and has been admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital,” said Noor Hisham.

The source of the three new clusters today was still under investigation, he added.

Commenting on the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Sabah, Noor Hisham said the ministry had mobilised its relief team, sending personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilators as well as having quarantine centres for stable Covid-19 patients to control the spread of infections in the state.

“Sabah now has six hospitals and six low-risk Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC), with a capacity of 590 to 1,396 beds,” said Noor Hisham.

Malaysia reported 317 new Covid-19 cases today, the biggest daily jump ever since the pandemic began in early January.

This brought the total number of cases in the country to 12,088.
