KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 15): The Utama cluster - where the index case is a 28-year-old Nepali security guard working at a shopping mall in Petaling district – now has a total of 132 cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 131 of the cases were reported in Selangor and the remaining one in Melaka. These cases involved 107 foreigners and 25 Malaysians.

“On Oct 15, 105 new cases were identified from this cluster. The cluster was first reported on Oct 10 involving the Gombak, Petaling and Hulu Langat districts in Selangor and Alor Gajah in Melaka,” he said in a virtual media briefing.

Dr Noor Hisham said the index case (case No 15023) developed fever, cough and flu on Sept 22. Following this, the index case tested positive on Oct 8 during a screening of close contacts and has been admitted to Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

Before this, the Ministry suspected case No 12549 as the index case, but further investigations established that case No 15023 showed symptoms first.

The 132 cases detected in the cluster comprise 87 security workers, 18 cleaners and 16 employees at several shopping malls, as well as six visitors and five family members of case No 12549, said Dr Noor Hisham.

To date, 447 individuals have been screened with 269 testing negative for the virus and 46 others awaiting their results.

The shopping mall is shut from Oct 11 to Oct 16 for cleaning and disinfection processes.

Malaysia registered 589 new Covid-19 cases today, raising total cases to 18,129.
