Covid-19: 1,257 cases involved schoolchildren in third wave

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22):  A total of 1,257 cases of Covid-19 has been noted among schoolchildren since the beginning of the third wave of the outbreak last month.

Of this, 587 cases involved those in the 7 to 12 age group, while the other 670 cases consisted of pupils aged 13 to 18, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said 12 schools were closed since the start of third wave, as the infections in these schools were linked to several COVID-19 clusters. 

The breakdown of the schools is as follows:

● Three schools in Negeri Sembilan, linked to the Cahaya cluster, Sofi cluster and Bah Manggis cluster

● Three schools in Johor linked to the Simera and Rinting clusters

● Two schools in Kuala Lumpur linked to the Jalan Pantai and Long clusters

● One school in Penang (Alma cluster)

● One school in Melaka (Bukit cluster)

● One school in Putrajaya (Selasih cluster)

● One school in Sarawak (Bah Arnab cluster)

“The 12 schools have been affected due to clusters. This does not mean the infections originated in the schools,” said Dr Noor Hisham in his daily media briefing.

“If COVID-19 infections spread in a school, then we close the school for disinfection and decontamination processes. [After that], we will conduct contact tracing or screening of close contacts,” he added.  

Malaysia recorded 847 new COVID-19 cases today, raising total cases to 23,804.
