KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 22): Malaysia today logged 2,062 new Covid-19 cases, with Selangor and Kuala Lumpur contributing 1,518 cases or 74% of today's new cases, with one death. The new cases raised Malaysia's cumulative confirmed Covid-19 infections to 97,389, from just 65,697 cases at end-November.

This is the third highest daily figure recorded to date, according to a statement from Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. The highest daily record holder remains 2,234 cases, registered on Dec 10, followed by 2,188 cases on Nov 24.

As the new additions topped new recoveries — which came in at 911, with total recoveries to date at 79,304 cases — the number of active cases that carry high transmission risks breached the 17,000 mark to 17,646, compared with 16,496 cases yesterday.

The sole death was recorded in Labuan, involving a 69-year-old man who had had a stroke. This brought the death toll from the coronavirus in the country to 439.

Selangor contributed the highest number of infections today with 1,014 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 504 and Sabah with 252.

Dr Noor Hisham also noted that 120 cases today came from the Covid-19-related prison clusters and temporary detention centres, comprising Tembok Gajah cluster in Johor with 88 cases, the Jalan Harapan prison cluster in Selangor with 24 cases, the Sandakan prison cluster in Sabah with three cases, the Seberang Perai prison cluster in Penang with another three, and the Tembok cluster in Kedah with two more cases.

Among the new cases, four were imported or infected when abroad.
