KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 24): Malaysia’s confirmed Covid-19 infections surpassed 100,000 today, after 14 straight days of four-digit cases.

New cases in the 24 hours up to noon totalled 1,581 — compared with 1,348 yesterday — with Selangor and Kuala Lumpur accounting for 870 cases.

This raised the cumulative confirmed infections to 100,318, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

He said two more persons died from the virus, raising the country’s total fatalities to 446. Both deaths involved Malaysians and took place in Sabah.

They were a 15-year-old girl and a 61-year-old man who had a history of medical ailments such as high blood pressure, dyslipidemia and stroke.

Selangor had the most infections for the ninth consecutive day with 491 new cases. Of this, 375 cases came from existing and new Covid-19 clusters as well as close contact screenings.

Kuala Lumpur recorded 379 cases, followed by Sabah with 249 cases, said Dr Noor Hisham.

He said 270 cases were from prison clusters and temporary detention centres, namely the Jalan Harapan cluster in Selangor (185 cases), the Tembok Gajah cluster in Johor (74 cases), the GK Tawau cluster in Sabah (six cases), the Tembok cluster in Kedah (four cases), and the Bakti cluster in Negeri Sembilan (one case).

Dr Noor Hisham said 1,085 more Covid-19 patients have recovered, bringing total recoveries to 81,099.

Active cases — patients who carry high transmission risks — climbed to a fresh high of 18,773.

Dr Noor Hisham announced four new Covid-19 clusters today, including three workplace-related clusters in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

The three are the Kebun Baru cluster in Kuala Langat, Selangor (with 95 cases), Jalan Tun construction site cluster in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur (26 cases) and Jalan Pandan cluster also in Kuala Lumpur (30 cases).

The fourth cluster detected today is the Sungai Burong cluster in Kuala Selangor, Selangor with 28 cases.

To date, 468 clusters have been reported in the country.

Meanwhile, 262 clusters have been declared as ended as no new cases were reported in 28 days.

They included six clusters which came to an end today, namely Kasir, Tomher MC, Mampulutr and Haven — all in Sabah — as well as Utama in Selangor and Rengas in Perak.
