KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 26): The Ministry of Health (MoH) today reported 2,335 newly confirmed Covid-19 cases, making it the highest daily record so far, pushing the country's cumulative total cases to 103,900. Today was also the 16th consecutive day Malaysia saw a four-digit figure for new cases.

Active cases — patients who carry high transmission risk — climbed to a fresh high of 20,035, surpassing the 20,000 mark for the first time. Meanwhile, 108 Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care units (ICU), with 50 cases requiring respiratory assistance.

According to a press statement by MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, state-wise, Kuala Lumpur saw the highest number of new cases today, with 728 infections (31.2% of the total), followed by Selangor with 710 new cases (30.4%) and Johor with 412 (17.6%).

A total of 308 cases were reported from clusters of infections related to lock-ups, immigration detention depots and prisons.

Two new Covid-19 related deaths were registered today, resulting in a total death toll of 451 so far. The deceased were a 44-year-old lady in Sabah and a 70-year-old man in Melaka. Both of them had a history of medical ailments, including obesity, dyspepsia, diabetes, high blood pressure and benign prostatic hypertrophy.

Meanwhile, 874 patients recovered and were discharged today, increasing the cumulative number of recoveries to 83,414 cases — 80.3% of the total.

Record 11 new clusters reported

The MoH also reported a record 11 new clusters today, pushing the total to 268 clusters of infections reported in the country so far. As it stands, there are now 215 active clusters with 59 clusters reporting new cases today. 

The 11 new clusters are known as Jalan Seng Construction Site Cluster in Kuala Lumpur, Pagar Siput Cluster in Johor, Subang Plastic Cluster in Selangor, Halban Cluster in Kelantan, Lis Putih Cluster in Penang, Sentosa Residential Cluster in Penang, Seragam Chepa Cluster in Kelantan, Pagar Bentong Cluster in Pahang, Jalan Asam Cluster in Selangor, Sungai Redan Cluster in Johor, and Semambu Cluster in Pahang. 

The clusters that reported the highest number of new cases today were Jalan Seng Construction Site Cluster (232 cases), Tampoi Jaya Cluster (218 cases) and Jalan Harapan Prison Cluster (156 cases).
