KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 28): New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia rose to 1,594 today from 1,196 reported on Sunday — marking the 19th straight day of four-digit increases — pushing the number of confirmed Covid-19 infections in the country to 106,690. That's an over 50% jump from the 67,169 cases recorded as at Dec 1.

Three more deaths were also recorded, which raised the death toll from the illness here to 455 or 0.43% of overall cases. Two deaths were reported in Selangor — one involving a 62-year-old woman and one a 90-year-old man. The third death was reported in Sabah involving a 62-year-old man.

New recoveries, meanwhile, came in lower than daily infections at 1,181, which resulted in the number of active cases — those who carry transmission risks — climbing further to a fresh high of 20,643. Cumulative recoveries now stand at 85,592 or 80.22% of total confirmed infections.

Selangor contributed the highest number of new cases today with 697, according to health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. “From this total, 593 cases were confirmed from [existing] clusters and the screening of close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients,” said Dr Noor Hisham at a press briefing today.

Kuala Lumpur was the second highest contributor with 194 cases, while Johor came in third with 191 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham noted that 108 cases today were from lock-ups, immigration depots and prison clusters.

These came from the Jalan Harapan prison cluster in Selangor (42 cases), the Bakti cluster in Negeri Sembilan (34), the Pagar Siput cluster in Johor (six), the Tembok cluster in Kedah (six), the Seberang Perai prison cluster in Penang (five), the Pagar Bentong cluster in Pahang (five), the Tembok Gajah cluster in Johor (four), the Sandakan prison cluster in Sabah (three) and the Kolam Air cluster in Kedah (three).

Among the new infections today, three were imported — meaning the infection occurred overseas.

Five new clusters identified, four linked to the workplace

Dr Noor Hisham also announced that five new Covid-19 infection clusters were found, four of which are linked to the workplace.

The four are: the Jalan Gadang construction site cluster involving Lembah Pantai and Cheras in Kuala Lumpur (13 cases); the Menara Sri cluster which spans Cheras, Kepong, Lembah Pantai and Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur as well as Kerian in Perak (14); the Bukit Pasir cluster in Muar, Johor (nine); and the Putra 15 cluster in Putrajaya (eight).

Meanwhile, the sole non-workplace-linked cluster is the Pintu Geng cluster in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, with 21 cases.

So far, the MoH has identified 489 clusters, of which 275 have been declared ended — including four more today — with no new cases reported in 28 days.

The four newly-ended clusters are: the Putra-18 cluster in Putrajaya, the PTS Tawau cluster in Sabah, the Tamar cluster in Selangor and the Intan cluster in Penang.

Earlier today, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah — which was supposed to end on Dec 31 — will be extended by another two weeks until Jan 14, 2021 due to the continued increase in positive Covid-19 cases, as well as the emergence of new clusters in Kuala Lumpur.

The CMCO in Selangor would cover the whole state except for the districts of Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor.
