PETALING JAYA (Jan 4): In light of the increasing number of Covid-19 positive cases, gyms and fitness centres in the Klang Valley might need to review the current “no-mask” standard operating procedure (SOP) to protect the safety of the clients and staff.

According to Malaysiakini’s report today, for the past one week, at least nine fitness centres have reported positive cases at their premises in the Klang Valley. People infected included members, instructors and other staff members.

The report listed out a number of affected fitness centres, including Union Strength in Hartamas; Tribe Boxing Studio in Mont'Kiara and Tropicana; Flyproject in Intermark, The Curve, Verve Shops, DC Mall, and Kiara 163; Club Aloha in Sri Hartamas; Revelation Republic in Taman Sea; Ministry of Burn in Bukit Damansara; Hustle Lifestyle in Solaris Dutamas; Pwrhouse in Desa Sri Hartamas; and Urban Spring Pilates in Bangsar.

All the affected centres have closed temporarily for sanitisation and contact tracing. The owners also announced the incidents to the public through social media platforms.

Despite the SOP issued by the National Security Council stating that face masks are not compulsory while exercising, whether indoor or outdoor, individuals are required to keep a safe physical distance of at least one metre.

However, the condition of the fitness centres – confined environments with poor ventilation – might harm users’ safety, said the report.
