KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 6): Malaysia reported today its highest number of daily newly-confirmed Covid-19 cases at 2,593 since the pandemic started and four additional deaths.

In a statement today, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pictured) said the four Covid-19-related fatalities brought the total number of deaths in Malaysia due to the pandemic to 513 so far.

“The 2,593 newly-confirmed cases brought the total number of Covid-19 positive cases in Malaysia to 125,438 cases (so far),”  Dr Noor Hisham said.

Out of the 2,593 cases, four involve individuals who were infected abroad while local transmissions involved 2,589 persons.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor was the worst-hit after the State reported the highest daily number of new Covid-19 cases at 965 followed by Johor and Sabah at 571 and 405 respectively.

He said that as of today, there are 141 Covid-19 patients who are being treated in intensive care units. Out of the 141, 67 needed breathing assistance, according to him.

"The total number of active Covid-19 cases stood at 24,347 cases,” he said.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, a total of 1,129 persons were recorded as having recovered from Covid-19 today.

The figure brought the country’s cumulative number of recovered Covid-19 patients to 100,578 so far.

On the four latest reported Covid-19-related deaths, Dr Noor Hisham said the deceased comprise two men and two women aged between 50 and 73 years old.

Two deaths were reported in Sabah, and one each in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur respectively, according to him.

Prior to today’s record high number of daily new confirmed Covid-19 cases at 2,593 in Malaysia, the previous daily record high figure stood at 2,525 cases on Thursday (Dec 31, 2020).

Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement on that day that the country reported eight Covid-19-related deaths, which brought the nation's cumulative number of Covid-19-related fatalities to 471 then.
