KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 10): Malaysia today saw 2,433 new Covid-19 cases, with total active cases rising to a new high of 27,332.

This is the sixth consecutive day, with more than 2,000 new cases.

This has brought the total number of infections in the country to 135,992, according to Ministry of Health (MoH) director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today.

At present, 171 patients are being treated in intensive care units (ICUs), with 76 requiring respiratory assistance. This shows an improvement from yesterday.

Meanwhile, 1,277 patients were cured and discharged, bringing total number of recoveries to 108,109.

Out of the new cases reported today, seven were imported, while the rest or 2,426 cases were local transmission — of which 1,784 were Malaysians and 642 were foreigners.

Selangor remains to see the highest daily of new cases at 730, representing 30%, followed by Sabah of 403 cases (16.6%) and Johor of 321 cases (13.2%).

Kuala Lumpur saw 231 cases today, while Penang has 189 and Negeri Sembilan has 144. This was followed by Kelantan (103 cases), Perak (80 cases), Kedah (71 cases), Pahang (41 cases), Melaka (35 cases), Terengganu (29 cases) Sarawak (24 cases), Labuan (17 cases), Putrajaya (10 cases) and Perlis (five cases).

Sabah continues to top the list of states with the highest cumulative infections to-date, with 40,666 cases, followed by Selangor that is closing up the gap with 39,727 cases and Kuala Lumpur of 15,969 cases.

Noor Hisham said a total of 86 cases were related to clusters in lockups, immigration detention depots, and prisons involving Jalan Harapan Prison cluster (79 cases), Pagar Siput cluster (three cases), Seberang Perai Prison cluster (three cases), and Tembok Choh cluster (one case).

There are nine deaths reported today, which brought the cumulative number of Covid-19 fatalities in the country to 551. The deceased were six men and three women, aged between 37 and 94.

Seven were Malaysian and two were foreigners. Apart from one death reported in Sabah, the rest were in the Klang Valley (five in Selangor and three in Kuala Lumpur).

Tomorrow, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be making a special announcement regarding the action to be taken by the government to deal with the recent escalating Covid-19 cases in the country and also the possibility of reintroducing the movement control order (MCO).
