KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 15): The Emergency Ordinance 2021 was officially gazetted yesterday, a check with the e-Federal Gazette site showed.

The ordinance is deemed to have come into effect on Monday (Jan 11), the day Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah declared a state of emergency to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, with the country seeing daily new positive cases routinely exceeding the 3,000 mark in the past few days.

The state of emergency is expected to end on Aug 1, subject to advice by a special independent committee comprising both government and opposition lawmakers as well as relevant health experts.

They will propose an earlier lifting of the state of emergency if the number of daily new Covid-19 cases is considered to have been brought under control effectively.
