KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 20): Malaysia reported an increase of 4,008 Covid-19 cases today, the second highest addition in a day and the second time its daily cases top the 4,000 mark, pushing cumulative infections in the country to 169,379. The highest count of daily cases of 4,029 was reported last Saturday.

There were also 11 more deaths related to the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH) director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham in a statement today. The deceased involved nine Malaysians and two foreigners aged between 54 and 90 years. Four of the fatalities were reported in Selangor, three in Sabah, three in Johor and one in Sarawak. This brought the country's coronavirus' death toll to 630.

The ministry also recorded the discharge of 2,374 Covid-19 patients today, raising total recoveries nationwide to 127,662 or 75.4% out of the total.

But as recoveries continued to lag new infections, active cases that carry transmission risks jumped past the 41,000 mark to 41,087.

Dr Noor Hisham said 113 of the new cases came from clusters linked to prisons, lock-ups and immigration depot centres, namely the Jalan Harapan prison cluster in Selangor (48 cases), Tembok Nanas cluster in Johor (45 cases), Tembok Mempaga cluster in Pahang (six), Telok Mas cluster in Melaka (five), Tembok Kemus cluster in Melaka (five), Seberang Perai prison cluster in Penang (three) and Damai Pelangi cluster in Selangor (one).

And five of the new daily infections today were imported cases, while the rest were domestic transmissions.

Selangor’s cumulative infections top 50,000

The most populous state of Selangor, meanwhile, continued to report the highest daily infections with 1,391 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (513), Johor (470) and Sabah (406).

With the new additions, cumulative confirmed infections for Selangor topped the 50,000 mark at 50,636 — the highest among all states and federal territories in the country. Sabah came in second with 45,008 cumulative infections, followed by Kuala Lumpur (19,411) and Johor (14,539).
