MoH: Record high 16 new Covid-19 clusters identified; 11 linked to workplaces

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 20): The Ministry of Health (MoH) today announced 16 new clusters today — the highest reported in a single day — bringing total active clusters being monitored by the Ministry to 318. The previous highest number of clusters it reported in a day was 13 on Jan 6.

Of the new clusters, 11 are linked to workplaces in Selangor, Sabah, Johor-Terengganu, Johor, Perak, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today.

The 11 are: Jalan Abdul Aziz construction site cluster in Petaling (56 cases) and Bestari Rantau cluster in Klang (16) in Selangor; Jalan Sejahtera cluster in Kuala Lumpur (15); Jalan Digital construction site cluster which spans Kulai in Johor and Hulu Terengganu in Terengganu (48); Tampoi Lima cluster in Johor Bahru (26) and Jalan Seroja cluster in Kulai, Johor (10); Jalan KKIP Selatan in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (14); Bukit Sebukor construction site cluster in Melaka Tengah (28) and Jalan Usaha cluster involving Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah, and Jasin, in Melaka (36); Persiaran Tasek cluster that spans Batang Padang, Kinta and Kuala Kangsar in Perak (20); and Sungai Ibor cluster in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan (12).

The remaining five clusters are: the Batu Enam cluster in Batang Padang, Perak (12); the Bukit Gelugor cluster in Kuantan, Pahang (22); the Jalan Niaga cluster that spans Kota Tinggi and Kluang in Johor (18); the Kampung Balibata cluster involving Beaufort and Sandakan in Sabah (35 cases); and the Sawmuil Luit cluster that spans Maran and Kuantan in Pahang (19).

To date, the Ministry has identified 685 clusters, of which 367 have ended after no new cases were reported in 28 days. Those ended included three more clusters that came to a close today, namely: the Jalan Domis and Jalan Tinusa clusters in Sabah; and the Delima cluster in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia today reported 4,008 new Covid-19 infections, pushing cumulative cases to 169,379. There were also 11 more deaths reported, which raised the death toll to 630.
