KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 23): A Covid-19 positive man took his own life over “an allegedly hefty medical bill” in Seri Kembangan last night, reported New Straits Times (NST).

According to the report, the 66-year-old retiree first tested positive for Covid-19 on Jan 7 at a private hospital, which made him depressed and stressed.

He told his wife he was better off dead rather than suffering with Covid-19, district police chief Assistant Commissioner Razali Abu Samah revealed to NST.

"When the second swab test taken on Jan 18 was again positive, he became worse and repeated his negative thoughts to his wife. The victim had also gone to his bank with his wife yesterday to withdraw RM40,000 for his medical bill," Razali said.

"According to his wife, her husband often complained of pain and was depressed since his Covid-19 test returned positive. He often told her 'it is better to die than to be sick like this'," he said.

"The man used a knife to slit his neck and was sprawled in a pool of blood in his living room. The weapon used was recovered (next to) the victim's body," he added.

Razali said the police have classified the case as sudden death.
