KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 29): The Ministry of Health (MoH) today announced the highest daily confirmed Covid-19 cases with 5,725, bringing the country's total cumulative infections to 203,933 cases.

The previous highest recorded daily cases was 4,275 recorded last Saturday (Jan 23). It is worth noting that Malaysia's daily new cases have reached four digits in the past 50 consecutive days since Dec 10, 2020.

More than half of the new cases reported today, or 3,126, came from Selangor alone, according to a press statement by MoH. Of these, 2,559 cases (81.9%) were from identified clusters and close contract screening actively conducted by the ministry in the field.

Kuala Lumpur came in second highest today with 687 new cases, followed by Johor with 684.

Unfortunately, 16 new deaths were registered today, resulting in a total death toll of 733.

Meanwhile, 3,423 Covid-19 patients were discharged today, raising total recoveries nationwide to 157,722 or 77.3% of overall cases.

But as recoveries lagged new infections today by a significant margin, active cases that carry transmission risks touched a new high of 45,478.

With the rising number of active cases, a total of 301 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units with 115 of them requiring breathing assistance.
