Covid-19: Malaysia snaps five-thousand streak as new cases drop to 4,214; 10 more deaths reported

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 1): New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia today dropped to 4,214 — after three consecutive days of staying above the 5,000 mark — with 10 more deaths, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

As new recoveries at 4,280 today came in higher than the new infections, active cases — which carry high transmission risk — fell slightly to 48,074 from 48,150 reported yesterday (Jan 31).

This leaves 316 Covid-19 patients in intensive care units (ICUs), with 137 of them needing ventilators to breathe.

However, it is worth noting that active cases have stayed above the 40,000 level for 13 straight days.

Among the new infections, nine were imported, while 4,205 were local transmissions, said MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

From the 4,205 locally-transmitted cases, 2,645 involved Malaysians, while the remaining 1,560 were foreigners, Noor Hisham said in his statement.

Selangor topped the list with the most Covid-19 infections today at 1,362, followed by Johor with 1,068 cases and Kuala Lumpur at 702.

Meanwhile, a total of 115 cases reported today were linked to lock-ups, depot immigration centres and prison clusters comprising the Tembok Taiping cluster in Perak with 81 cases, the Tembok Renggam cluster in Johor (25 cases), the Tembok Mempaga cluster in Pahang (seven cases), the Tembok Sungai Udang cluster in Melaka (one) and the Tembok Kemus cluster in Melaka as well (one).

With the 10 additional deaths reported today, the country's cumulative Covid-19 death toll increased to 770.

Three deaths were reported in Negeri Sembilan and one each in Johor, Labuan, Sarawak, Selangor, Perak, Melaka and Terengganu. The deceased involved seven men and three women, aged between 26 and 87 years.

Malaysia’s total cases to date surged to 219,173 versus total recoveries at 170,329.

14 new clusters, nine workplace-related, identified by MoH

The ministry also identified 14 new clusters, bringing total active clusters still being monitored to 401.

Nine out of 14 new clusters are linked to workplaces detected in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Johor, Sabah, Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan.

The nine workplace clusters are:

• The Jalan Lagoon construction site cluster in Petaling, Selangor with 76 infections
• Industri Puchong cluster in Petaling, Selangor with 44 infections
• Persiaran Raya cluster in Manjung, Perak (18 infections)
• Lapangan Siber cluster in Kinta, Perak (21)
• Kampung Parit Masjid cluster in Muar, Johor (44)
• Jalan Puchong construction site cluster in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur (332)
• Ladang Sungai Pin cluster in Kinabatangan, Sabah (36)
• Bintang Daily cluster in Meradong, Sarawak (8)
• Nilam Tiga cluster in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan (63)

Three clusters are linked to high-risk groups, namely the Jalan Empat cluster in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur with 29 infections, followed by the Jalan Tan cluster in Lembah Pantai, also in Kuala Lumpur, with 17 infections; and the Sungai Purun cluster in Hulu Langat and Petaling in Selangor (27).

Meanwhile, the remaining two clusters are related to Covid-19 infections among the community, namely the Kampung Samin cluster and the Padas Damit cluster. Both clusters are in Sabah.

A total of 831 clusters have been reported by the ministry so far, while 430 clusters have been declared ended after no new cases were reported from them in 28 days.
