KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 13): Malaysia has recorded an increase in the number of daily confirmed Covid-19 cases today at 3,499, compared to 3,318 yesterday, pushing the cumulative figure in the country to 261,805.

Coronavirus-related deaths dropped to five today, as the Covid-19 national death toll climbed to 958, according to the Ministry of Health. Malaysia has been recording double-digit deaths for over two weeks — including the highest at 21 deaths on Feb 2 — until today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement today that the tally of active cases, which carry high transmission risks, currently stands at 51,558.

It is worth noting that active cases in the country have remained above the 10,000 mark for more than three months since Nov 3, 2020. The figure has stayed above the 50,000 level since eight days ago on Feb 6.

The number of recoveries today came in slightly higher than new infections at 3,515. Cumulative recoveries now stand at 209,289, or a recovery rate of 79.9% of total cumulative Covid-19 cases.

A total of 263 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units with 118 of them requiring breathing assistance, Dr Noor Hisham said.

Of the new cases today, 70, or 2%, were related to clusters linked to prisons, namely the Tembok Bendera cluster (46 new cases), Tembok Sungai Udang cluster (18), and Seberang Perai Prison cluster (6).

Selangor topped the list with the most Covid-19 infections at 1,345 or 38.5% of total new cases today, followed by Johor (802) and Kuala Lumpur (511).
