KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 19): Malaysiakini has managed to get donations of more than RM500,000 in under five hours after it launched a fundraising effort to help pay a fine imposed by the Federal Court today.

The news portal was today found guilty by the Federal Court of contempt of court for comments posted by its readers that were deemed to have attacked the judiciary, and had until Wednesday to pay a RM500,000 fine.

Following the success of the fundraising, Malaysiakini stated that it will halt the process and decide “on where to channel the excess funds”.

“All donations will be accounted for and Malaysiakini will be transparent,” it added.

CEO Premesh Chandran thanked readers and the public for their support, adding that “even though I am sure many are having a difficult time themselves during this pandemic”.

"It shows all that is right and wrong in this country. That the rakyat is willing to step up and do their bit to make their voices heard and make the country better, and contribute to righting the wrongs," he said.

Editor-in-chief Steven Gan said his team "are deeply humbled by the astonishing show of generosity by those who have contributed to our Legal Defence Fund”.

"We don’t know how to repay your trust in us other than to continue to do our job the best way we can in an environment that is increasingly hostile to journalists in Malaysia," he added.
