Covid-19: Malaysia records 2,936 new cases with 13 more deaths; actives drop to 36,797

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 19): Malaysia reported 2,936 new Covid-19 infections today — bringing the country's cumulative confirmed infections to 277,811 — with 13 more deaths recorded.

The latest fatalities raised the coronavirus' death toll in the country to 1,043, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

According to his statement, six fatalities were reported from Kuala Lumpur, three from Selangor, two from Sarawak, and one each from Melaka and Johor. The deceased were aged between 53 and 84 years.

Meanwhile, 4,889 recoveries were recorded in the last 24 hours, which means new recoveries exceeded new infections for six consecutive days. With these, the number of active cases that carry transmission risks dropped further to 36,797 from 38,763 yesterday. As for total recoveries, the tally has been raised to 239,971.

Selangor contributed the biggest portion of the new infections nationwide, with 978 new cases, followed by Johor with 730 and Kuala Lumpur with 227. Selangor also has the highest cumulative Covid-19 cases with 92,526, followed by Sabah (51,870), Kuala Lumpur (32,987) and Johor (33,149).

13 new clusters detected

Another 13 new Covid-19 clusters were identified by the ministry as of noon today, said Dr Noor Hisham.

Ten of these clusters involve workplaces, two are community clusters and one is linked to high-risk groups.

The 10 workplace clusters are:
• Kompleks Perabot cluster in Kuala Langat, Selangor (21 infections)
• Jalan Sementa cluster in Petaling, Selangor (12)
• Jalan Murni 12 cluster in Kulai, Johor (339)
• Jalan Kota Murni cluster in Batu Pahat, Johor (12)
• Jalan Indah Utama cluster involving Kulai, Johor Bahru and Kota Tinggi in Johor (23)
• Jalan Tun Mutahir cluster in Kota Tinggi, Johor (7)
• Parit Haji Khamis cluster in Batu Pahat, Johor (9)
• Kejatau cluster in Sri Aman, Sarawak (7)
• Jalan Kuchai cluster in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur (14)
• Singgahmata cluster in Lahad Datu, Sabah (11)

The two community clusters are the Bukit Petiti cluster which spans Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun in Terengganu with 15 infections; and the Jalan Green cluster in Kuching, Sarawak with six infections.

The lone high-risk group cluster, namely the Kubang Jambu cluster, has seven infections.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic reached our shores in January last year, a total of 1,058 infection clusters have been detected in the country, with 547 of them having ended while 511 remain active.
