MACC fails to seize RM2.73m from Umno Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR (March 1): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has today failed to seize RM2.73 million from Umno Selangor which the former claimed had originated from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) funds.

This follows High Court judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin today dismissing the MACC's forfeiture application.

Justice Jamil ruled that the MACC failed to prove that the RM2.73 million in Umno Selangor's accounts was received from former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak or that it is from ill-gotten money.

Justice Jamil also dismissed an oral application by the prosecution led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Haslinie Hashim for an interim stay of today's decision.

Umno Selangor was represented by counsel Datuk Hasnal Rezue Merican.

Hasnal confirmed the decision to theedgemarkets.com when contacted today.

He said following the court not granting an interim stay, he would apply soon for the funds and account to be unfrozen.

Umno Selangor along with Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Selangor Umno chief Datuk Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan, its secretary Datuk Mohamed Satim Diman, Selangor Umno liaison committee and its treasurer Datuk Johan Abdul Aziz were the respondents.

On Feb 22, Justice Jamil also dismissed an application by the MACC to forfeit RM677,872.55 from Umno Johor.

The MACC had filed civil forfeiture applications against 41 people and entities to recover RM270 million allegedly taken from 1MDB.
