KUALA LUMPUR (March 9): New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia dropped to a new 2021 low of 1,280 today, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The drop in new infections from 1,529 reported yesterday brought cumulative cases to 316,269.

This is also the fourth straight day that new infections stay below the 2,000 level.

Two of today's new infections were imported while the remaining were local transmissions, Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement.

Nine more fatalities were recorded in the latest 24-hour reporting period, raising the national Covid-19 death toll to 1,186.

These involved four patients in Selangor, and one each in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak, aged between 38 and 88 years.

Meanwhile, another 2,345 Covid-19 patients were discharged, raising total recoveries to 296,379 compared with 170,329 as of Jan 1.

Total active cases declined further to 18,704, the lowest since Dec 24, 2020.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor continued to report the highest number of fresh cases with 464, of which 368 were confirmed from the existing and new Covid-19 clusters as well as screening of close contacts of Covid-19-positive patients.

These were followed by Johor with 165 cases, Sarawak (163) and Kuala Lumpur (119).

Dr Noor Hisham said nine new Covid-19 clusters were detected, bringing the total active clusters to 457.

Six of the clusters were linked to workplaces, including two in Johor (Jalan Nusa Mega in Johor Bahru with 36 infections and Jalan Industri A1 cluster in Tangkak with 21 infections).

Three workplace clusters are from the Klang Valley, namely Tapak Bina Jalan U-Thant cluster in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur with 35 cases; Tapak Bina Jalan Salak cluster in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur with 16 cases; and Lorong Kilang cluster involving Petaling and Klang districts in Selangor with 41 infections.
