KUALA LUMPUR (March 13): Dr Xavier Jayakumar (pictured) has resigned as a vice-president and member of PKR, after being with the party for 23 years.

In a statement on his Twitter page, the former minister of land, water and natural resources said he would be serving his constituency with immediate effect as an independent representative while supporting the government.

The Kuala Langat MP explained that he has grown increasingly frustrated and noted that while there are parties discussing the possibility of elections, this is not necessary or viable at this point in time.

“Our current priority should be to support the government in containing the Covid-19 pandemic, to create jobs and secure funds to rebuild the economy. It will take at least 18 months just to complete the vaccination programme and more than two years for the economy to fully recover.

“This needs bipartisan support, to make sure the efforts of the government are fulfilled," he said.

He added that the people want stability and to restart ailing economic sectors. As such, there needs to be a focus on working together, not against one another.
