Malaysia posts 1,470 new Covid-19 cases, three fatalities

KUALA LUMPUR (March 13): Malaysia recorded 1,470 new Covid-19 cases today, marking eight straight days of reporting fewer than 2,000 new daily infections.

In a statement, Health Director-General (DG) Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor, Sarawak and Penang contributed the highest number of cases today.

Selangor contributed 551 cases, Sarawak saw 222 cases and Penang reported 178 cases today.

The DG said there were 1,458 locally transmitted cases, of which 1,099 were Malaysian citizens while 359 were foreign nationals. 

Meanwhile, there were 12 imported cases, of which eight were Malaysians and four were foreigners.

As a result, the total number of cases has increased to 322,409.

Meanwhile, there were 1,830 recoveries today, resulting in 304,492 cumulative recoveries or a recovery rate of 94.4%.

Following the number of recoveries outstripping new infections, active cases have now declined to 16,711, the lowest since Dec 21, 2020, when 16,496 cases were reported.

The number of cases in the intensive care unit stood at 162, with 70 cases requiring respiratory assistance.

The pandemic has claimed another three lives today, resulting in the death toll from the virus standing at 1,206 or 0.37% of the cumulative number of cases experienced by the country. 

All of the deceased were Malaysian nationals. One death each was recorded in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Terengganu.

The DG also noted that 89 cases were reported from immigration depot detention centre and prison clusters.

Specifically, they were the Tembok Tapah Cluster (49 cases), the DTI Persiaran Wawasan Cluster (29 cases), the Jalan Harapan Prison Cluster (eight cases), the Tembok Mempaga Cluster (two cases) and the Tembok Taiping Cluster (one case).

Two new clusters reported

It was also announced that two new Covid-19 clusters were reported today. 

Both are workplace-related clusters, with one located in Johor and the other in Kuala Lumpur.

The Jalan Mega Cermelang Cluster in Johor Bahru was discovered following its index case (Case 315,601) testing positive on March 9.

This cluster involves family contacts and workers at a food factory located on Jalan Mega 1/6, Taman Perindustrian Nusa Cemerlang, Nusajaya, Johor.  

As of today, 54 individuals have been tested, with 19 cases yielding positive results.

Meanwhile, the Jalan Pria Cluster in Kuala Lumpur is spread between Titiwangsa and Cheras. The index case (Case 315,782) was found positive on March 9. This cluster involves a care centre on Jalan Pria 4, Taman Maluri. As of today, 37 individuals have been tested, with 10 found positive.

Meanwhile, 16 clusters have officially ended today, namely the Jalan Bukit Baru Cluster, Jalan Dua Belas Cluster, Lorong Sahabat Cluster, Laman Desaru Cluster, Jalan Bagan Cluster, Jalan Gombak Cluster, Kandi Sungai Besi Cluster, Jalan Pulai 55 Cluster, Jalan Lagoon Construction Site Cluster, Perdana Avenue Construction Site Cluster, Casuarina Construction Site Cluster, Damanlela Construction Site Cluster, Jalan i-Park Satu Cluster, Jalan Lengkok Cluster, Jalan Masjid Tanah Cluster and Ladang Baturong Cluster

All in all, 808 clusters have ended and cumulatively 1,234 clusters have been detected in the country so far. Active clusters now account for 426 clusters.

Fifty-two clusters yielded new cases today, with the clusters contributing the highest number of cases being the Jalan Salak Construction Site Cluster (73 cases), the Lintang Bayan Lepas Cluster (56 cases) and Tembok Tapah Cluster (49 cases).
