KUALA LUMPUR (March 31): Malaysia reported 1,482 new Covid-19 cases today – the second straight day with more than 1,000 new infections – raising cumulative cases to 345,500.

Seven more deaths were recorded, taking the nationwide Covid-19 death toll to 1,272, said health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Four deaths were confirmed in Selangor, and one each in Sarawak, Sabah and Johor, he said in a statement.

Active cases rose to 14,604 from 14,199 yesterday, as new daily recoveries came lower than new infections at 1,070. Total recoveries to-date stood at 329,624 or 95.4% of overall infections.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor again reported the highest number of new cases at 661, up from 401 reported yesterday. This raises total cases in the country's most populous state to 116,078, compared with 33,169 as at Jan 1.

Selangor was followed by Penang (200), Sarawak (176), Johor (86), Sabah (69), Kelantan (57), Kuala Lumpur (42), Melaka (41), Kedah (37), Pahang (36), Negeri Sembilan (32), Perak (31), Labuan (eight), Putrajaya (three), Terengganu (two) and Perlis (one).

All but two of the new cases were locally-transmitted, comprising 896 Malaysians and 584 foreigners. The remaining two cases were imported.

Dr Noor Hisham said the latest seven deaths involved five Malaysians and two foreigners aged between 53 and 96 years.

13 new clusters detected

Thirteen new Covid-19 clusters were detected including seven linked to the workplace, five community clusters and a high-risk group cluster.

The seven workplace clusters are Hevea Scruciana in Selangor (55 infections), Jalan Rasmi which spans Selangor and Kuala Lumpur (58), Jalan Kingsway in Sarawak (51), Bulatan Aman in Sarawak (43), Jalan Jelawat involving Penang and Perak (145),  Delima Baiduri in Kedah (10), and Pulau Enoe in Labuan (eight).

The five community clusters are Jalan Baji in Sarawak (20 infections), Kampung Baru Pasir Putih in Sabah (eight), Rimbayan in Sabah (15), Emas Bemban in Kedah (six), and Layar in Kedah (10).

The lone high-risk group cluster is Lorong Mulia in Johor, with nine infections.

So far, 1,372 clusters linked to the virus have been reported in the country, of which 1,002 have been declared ended.
