KUALA LUMPUR (April 2): Malaysia reported 1,294 new Covid-19 cases today, up from 1,178 yesterday and the fourth straight day with more than 1,000 infections.

Five more deaths due to the virus were recorded – two in Sarawak, and one each in Johor, Penang and Sabah – taking the nationwide Covid-19 death toll to 1,283.

All of the deceased were Malaysians and aged between 52 and 84 years, said health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

The country’s total cases now stand at 347,972. Of the new cases, 1,268 were local transmissions, while the remaining 26 were imported.

Selangor posted 455 new cases, followed by Sarawak (217), Penang (139) and Johor (103), said Dr Noor Hisham.

The number of active cases, meanwhile, dropped to 14,246 from 14,339 the day before, as new recoveries came in at 1,442 – more than new infections. Total recoveries in the country increased further to 332,443 or 95.5% of overall infections.

On infection clusters, Dr Noor Hisham said 10 more Covid-19 clusters were detected, bringing the number of clusters reported so far to 1,388.

The new clusters comprise seven workplace clusters, two community clusters and one high-risk group cluster.

The seven workplace clusters are: the Banjaran Gading cluster in Sabah (eight infections); the Simpang Empat cluster in Sabah (11); the Industri Bukit Angkat cluster in Selangor (38); the Jalan Taat cluster in Johor (nine); the Jalan Bukit Nanas cluster in Kuala Lumpur (nine); the Jalan Padang cluster which spans Negeri Sembilan and Melaka (14); and the Wakaf Chagak cluster in Terengganu (nine).

Meanwhile, the two community clusters are the Kalindukan cluster in Sabah (13 infections); and the Permatang Pasir cluster in Negeri Sembilan (11).

The sole new high-risk group cluster identified is the Pekan Batu cluster in Selangor, which has 15 infections.

To date, 1,025 clusters have been declared ended, while 363 remain active.
