Malaysia reports over 2,800 new Covid-19 cases for second day; Selangor leads with 748

KUALA LUMPUR (April 23): New Covid-19 infections today remained above 2,800 for the second straight day with 2,847 cases, raising the country's total cases to 387,535, the Health Ministry said.

Selangor emerged as the state with the highest number of daily infections with 748 cases, rising from 633 yesterday. Sarawak came in second with 717 cases.

Kuala Lumpur, however, recorded 302 cases today, a slight decrease from yesterday's 332.

Eight Covid-19 related deaths were reported during the 24-hour period, bringing Malaysia's coronavirus death toll to 1,415, health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement. The death toll represents 0.37% of total cases in the country since the pandemic hit.

Kelantan, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak recorded two deaths respectively, and among them was one foreign national.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said another 2,341 cases have recovered from Covid-19 — compared with 2,541 yesterday — which brought total recoveries to date to 363,608, translating to a recovery rate of 93.8%.

With the rise in infections, the number of active cases has increased to 22,512. Of these, 260 patients are in intensive care units, including 125 on ventilators.

Eight new clusters today

The Health Ministry identified eight new Covid-19 clusters, of which four involve Education Ministry institutions and one involves an education institute, while two are community clusters and one involves a workplace.

The clusters involving the Education Ministry institutions are at Jalan Roban Lama (48 cases) and Jalan Selirik (23 cases) in Sarawak, Jalan Sungai Daun in Penang (nine cases) and Persiaran Sri Saujana in Johor (eight cases).

Meanwhile, the educational institution cluster is located at Mempaga Satu in Pahang (44 cases) while the workplace cluster is located at Jalan Bukit Bintang here (seven cases).

The community clusters are Gong Dermin in Kelantan (51 cases) and Seri Desa in Pahang (10 cases).

The total number of active clusters in the country stands at 354.
