KUALA LUMPUR (May 8): Malaysia's newly-confirmed Covid-19 cases today rose to 4,519 from 4,498 yesterday while pandemic-linked deaths climbed to 25 from 22, health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said.

Dr Noor Hisham said 16 new Covid-19 clusters were identified across Malaysia today.

"Most of the [Covid-19] infection cases in our country now are sporadic within the community, which means we do not know the source of the infection,” Dr Noor Hisham said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

He said the number of sporadic Covid-19 cases across the nation is higher than the number of pandemic cluster cases.

"The 25 Covid-19 related deaths reported today included one foreigner,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) update on Twitter, the newly-confirmed Covid-19 infected individuals reported today brought the nation’s total number of pandemic cases to 436,944 so far.

The MoH said among the new cases, 4,514 were local transmissions and five were imported.

Meanwhile, the 25 deceased reported today brought the nation’s total number of pandemic-linked fatalities to 1,657, according to the MoH.

The ministry said 393 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units across the country, 210 of whom need breathing assistance devices.

The MoH said the country reported today 2,719 individuals who have recovered from Covid-19. This brought the nation’s total recoveries to 398,723 so far.

Geographically, Selangor recorded the highest number of new cases today at 1,722, followed by Kuala Lumpur (557), according to the MoH.

Elsewhere, Sarawak and Penang registered 479 and 363 new cases respectively.

At the press conference today, Dr Noor Hisham said Malaysia’s second Movement Control Order (MCO 2.0) to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic did not fail.

He said if the country had not implemented MCO 2.0, the number of new Covid-19 cases could have breached 10,000 a day.

“We need to adapt to the new environment,” he said.

In a separate statement, Dr Noor Hisham said the 16 new Covid-19 clusters detected today brought the nation’s total number of pandemic clusters to 1,775 so far.

He said 429 clusters are still active while 1,346 have ended.
