KUALA LUMPUR (May 11): Doctors in India are warning the public in the country that cow dung cannot prevent Covid-19 infections and may instead spread other diseases, Reuters reported today.

Since last year, there have been reports that people in India were smearing themselves with cow dung or taking dips in water heavily mixed with the cow waste as they are convinced that it can prevent Covid-19 infections.

"There is no concrete scientific evidence that cow dung or urine works to boost immunity against Covid-19. It is based entirely on belief," Dr J.A. Jayalal, national president of the Indian Medical Association told Reuters.

"There are also health risks involved in smearing or consuming these products - other diseases can spread from the animal to humans."

As Covid-19 cases surge to world record levels India, desperation is prompting more people to opt for such traditional remedies.

In the latest cases of people using cow dung to shield against Covid-19, some residents in Gujarat,  western India have been smearing  their bodies in cow dung and urine to “boost their immunity against, or help them recover from, the coronavirus”, said the report.

The cow is a sacred symbol of life and the earth in the Hindu faith and people in the sub-continent have used cow dung to clean homes and for prayer rituals as it is thought to have “therapeutic and antiseptic properties”.
