KUALA LUMPUR (May 20): Malaysia hit another record high of new daily Covid-19 cases with 6,806 infections, up from yesterday's 6,075, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Daily fatalities also reached a new high of 59, bringing total deaths linked to the coronavirus to 2,099.

This is the second day the country's daily infections come in above the 6,000 level, and Selangor again recorded the highest new cases with 2,277, followed by Kuala Lumpur (655), Johor (615), Sarawak (608), Kelantan (426), Kedah (417), Penang (362), Negeri Sembilan (291), Perak (248), Sabah (245), Terengganu (233), Melaka (212), Pahang (157), Putrajaya (35), Labuan (17) and Perlis (8).

In a statement, Dr Noor Hisham also said there were 3,916 recoveries registered in the past 24 hours, raising total recoveries from the coronavirus to 440,032, which represents a recovery rate of 89.4%.

But as new infections surpassed new recoveries, active cases rose to 50,171, with 587 of them being treated in intensive care units, while 330 need ventilators for respiratory assistance.

24 more infection clusters found, another new daily high

The ministry also identified 24 new Covid-19 clusters today, another new daily record, surpassing yesterday's 22 new infection clusters.

Nine of the clusters were workplace clusters, six were religious centre clusters, seven were community clusters, with one high risk cluster and one education centre cluster.

To date, the nation has identified 1,966 Covid-19 clusters, of which 1,438 have been declared ended, leaving 528 active clusters.
