JOHOR BAHRU (June 2): A tuition teacher is “believed” to be the first person to be charged under the emergency ordinance on the publication of fake news, the FMT news portal reported today.

Mohd Nazaruddin Yusoff, 50, was charged at the sessions court here today over the posting of false news on Facebook.

Mohd Nazaruddin reportedly committed the offence at the Pontian district police HQ at about 11.50am on April 21.

The accused published on Facebook that a traffic policeman died after receiving a second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine: “Mati lagi … di Pontian, Vaksin kedua.”

A post-mortem report later revealed that the policeman passes away owing to a heart attack.

Mohd Nazaruddin claimed trial and was released after paying a RM8,000 bail. Sessions court judge Ahmad Fuad Othman fixed mention on July 7.
