KUALA LUMPUR (June 10): Selangor will receive 25% of all Covid-19 vaccine procurements, a Federal Minister said yesterday in response to the Selangor Sultan's remark that the State had only received about 600,000 vaccines so far.

The Malay Mail news portal quoted Coordinating Minister of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme Khairy Jamaluddin (pictured) as saying that the agency planned to speed up vaccine distribution to Selangor following Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s remark.

Khairy said Selangor was previously allocated 17% of total nationwide vaccine procurements but with the delivery of more vaccines expected this month as well as the opening of new vaccination centres, the State will be able to handle more volume compared to previous months.

“Selangor's population aged 18 and above compared to the rest of the country is around 20% and with the previous PPV capacity, we could not handle more vaccines.

“Now we have decided to increase the supply to Selangor with more PPV’s opening like the one in Setia Alam, UiTM Puncak Alam and more to come, will be able to allow us to prioritise Selangor and those in the Klang Valley,” the Malay Mail quoted Khairy as saying.

Sultan Sharafuddin on Tuesday expressed shock that Selangor has only received 615,210 doses of Covid-19 vaccine, and not 2.91 million as previously claimed.

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation had previously released data that claimed that 2.91 million Covid-19 vaccine doses had been delivered to Selangor as at May 30.

The Selangor ruler found the ratio of vaccine doses supplied to Selangor’s total population of 6.5 million unbalanced and unfair, saying priority should be given to the State as it is the largest contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

Malaysia yesterday reported 6,239 new Covid-19 cases, lifting the nationwide tally of confirmed infections to 633,891.
