PETALING JAYA (June 15): The government’s special tax for rental reduction scheme still has room to improve as survey showed over 50% of respondents did not receive any waiver from their landlords, reported FMT.

Quoting Klang MP Charles Santiago, the report said only 27.8% out of the 1,196 respondents, who are small business owners, said they benefited from the rental waiver.

A survey conducted by his office showed that 51.3% of them did not receive any waiver at all from their landlords.

“The government’s special tax rental reduction scheme is not really helpful for most tenants… The given amount and duration are also insignificant compared with the toxic combination of high operating costs (rental and labour) and falling sales plus lower revenues,” Santiago said.

The survey also found that 81% of the respondents said they might have to close down their business in the next three months due to cashflow problems.

Meanwhile, 60.2% of the respondents said their loan applications were rejected by financial institutions.
