Sydney anticipates extended lockdown due to increasing Covid-19 cases

SYDNEY (July 12): The largest city in Australia is expected to extend the current lockdown due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases caused by the highly infectious Delta variant, reported Reuters.

Despite major cities entering the third week of lockdown, the number of Covid-19 cases have not subsided. According to the news report today, New South Wales (NSW) state reported 112 new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases, the majority of which were from Sydney.

State Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the progress of that figure in the coming days would determine whether Sydney's lockdown, due to end on Friday (July 16), would be extended.

In a separate news report by NZ Herald, quoting NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant, he said that family transmission is the main cause for the spike cases. On Sunday (July 11), 50 cases out of the 77 cases were contracted in the same household.

Chant added that the number of cases will continue to rise as the authority is ramping up the testing.

"That's the general impact of the lockdown. What you're trying to do is decrease the mobility of the population overall, decrease opportunities for interactions between one person and another, and then basically slow the spread of the disease more broadly. What we're observing in south-western Sydney is really why it's been amplified, because of the close interactions of households," said Chant in the news report.

Meanwhile,  NSW police deputy commissioner Gary Worboys said 106 infringement notices were handed out by NSW Police for a number of gatherings across the city overnight.
