KUALA LUMPUR (July 16): Malaysia's Covid-19 cases declined to 12,541 today from yesterday's all-time high of 13,215, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Selangor remained as the state with the highest number of new infections at 5,512, followed by Negeri Sembilan with 1,619, and Kuala Lumpur with 1,542.

Meanwhile, Johor posted 609 new daily cases, followed by Melaka (575), Kedah (458), Sarawak (423), Pahang (382), Penang (376), Sabah (326), Perak (299), Kelantan (225) and Terengganu (102).

The new cases were detected from the screening of 140,008 individuals, indicating a positivity rate of 8.96%.

A total of 115 Covid-19-related deaths were also reported today, bringing the death toll in the country to 6,728. Of the new fatalities, 53 deaths were reported in Selangor, 24 in Kuala Lumpur, seven each in Johor and Melaka, five in Penang, four each in Negeri Sembilan and Kedah, three each in Sabah and Perak, two each in Kelantan and Terengganu, and one in Labuan.

Daily recoveries, on the other hand, came in lower than the new infections by almost half at 6,742. To date, a total of 772,542 have been declared recovered from the virus, translating into a recovery rate of 86.48%.

Active cases continued to soar to 114,053, with 896 patients warded in the intensive care units (ICUs) and 459 requiring ventilator support.

In total, the country has reported 893,323 Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began.

51.9% of today’s cases are from Category 1

Dr Noor Hisham pointed out that more than half or 6,504 cases from today’s new cases are from Category 1 (no symptoms) and 46.6% or 5,848 are from Category 2 (mild symptoms).

For Category 3 (Pneumonia), only 0.7% or 86 cases were reported today.

Category 4 (Pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) recorded 0.4% or 49 cases today, and 0.4% or 54 of today's cases are from Category 5 (Critical & Requiring Assisted Ventilation), he said.

R0 rises to 1.20 on July 15

Dr Noor Hisham also updated that the country's basic reproduction number (R-naught or R0) for Covid-19 infections nationwide went up to 1.20 on July 15, up from 1.19 the day before, with Putrajaya having the highest R0 at 1.32.

Terengganu came in second at 1.27, followed by Kedah at 1.23, Selangor at 1.20, and Penang at 1.20.

The R0 or Rt projects the average number of people that each new Covid-19 patient will infect, or what is termed the effective reproduction number. An R0 of less than 1.0 means the infection is not spreading.

37 new clusters detected, 19 linked to workplaces

The MOH also identified 37 new Covid-19 clusters today, bringing the number of active clusters to 893.

Of the new clusters, 19 were workplace clusters, while eight were community clusters. The remaining clusters were linked to detention centres, the high-risk community and education groups.
