Covid-19: Singapore govt advises unvaccinated people to stay home

SINGAPORE (July 19): Singapore’s health ministry advised unvaccinated individuals, especially the elderly, to stay at home over the next few weeks, in view of the increasing number of daily new cases, reported Reuters.

The growing clusters of infections linked to karaoke bars and a fishery port have sparked the concern of the risk of community transmissions.

"We urge members of the public to reach out to your elderly relatives or neighbours who remain unvaccinated to see what assistance they may require, e.g. to buy daily necessities," said Singapore health ministry in a statement on July 18.

The ministry said it is "particularly concerned" that the elderly, some of whom remain unvaccinated, may be infected at wet markets, where Covid-19 clusters have been detected in recent days.

This comes after four unvaccinated seniors were found to be among the new Covid-19 cases reported on Sunday.

Singapore has reported 88 locally-transmitted coronavirus cases on July 18, the highest daily toll since August 2020.

About 73% of Singapore’s 5.7 million population has received the first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, those above 70 years of age have the lowest takeup rates at about 71%.

According to the news report, the city-state has tightened some restrictions on social gatherings from July 12 just a week after easing them. However, it has more lenient rules for those who have been vaccinated.
