PETALING JAYA (July 22): Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh and Sepanggar lawmaker Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman urged the government to allow fully vaccinated visa holders under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H), especially foreign spouses, to re-enter the country.

Yeoh and Azis said such a move will reduce the stress currently felt by families impacted by the missing spouses as “children’s education, medical treatment, job security and many more are fully subjected to the renewal of a spouse's visa”.

They also said that a resumption of MM2H could be beneficial to the country as the programme has contributed billions to the local economy. The MM2H scheme has been officially suspended since last year.

“It is estimated that MM2H visa holders spend RM10,000 a month or RM120,000 annually on living expenses when they make Malaysia their second home.”

Therefore, instead of courting for new foreign investment, both MPs suggested that the current government should focus on the suspended MM2H and release the revised guidelines.

“In a pandemic like this when our economy is so battered, while we struggle to hold together whatever that is remaining, it is common sense to not drive away the current contributor of our national income.”

In doing so, as these visa holders are subjected to the Sistem Temujanji Online that are normally fully booked three months in advance, they suggested that the visa renewal could be extended for a longer period of time.

Meanwhile, they have also commented on the need to improve Home Ministry services by moving its services online to meet the changing needs of the current situation.

“This will automatically reduce the large crowd at immigration counters and provide more certainty to these family units.”
