Malaysia administered record high 553,871 doses of Covid-19 vaccine on July 27; 18.1% of population fully inoculated

KUALA LUMPUR (July 28): Malaysia administered 553,871 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine yesterday (July 27) — the highest daily figure so far — up 6.12% from 521,923 previously.

This was the second consecutive day that the country delivered over 500,000 vaccine doses.

Of the latest doses, 356,112 went to first-dose recipients, while 197,759 were second jabs, according to latest tweets by the Special Committee on Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), citing data by the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF).

Among the states and federal territories, Selangor delivered the highest number of first doses yesterday at 84,409, followed by Kuala Lumpur (57,525), Johor (40,791), Sabah (29,560) and Penang (23,042).

For second doses, Selangor also led the country with 56,773 shots yesterday, followed by Kuala Lumpur (35,592) and Sarawak (26,574).

Cumulatively as of yesterday, 18.39 million Covid-19 vaccine doses had been administered nationwide since the country’s vaccination plan started on Feb 24. A total of 12.49 million people or 38.2% of the nation’s population had received at least their first dose, including 5.91 million individuals or 18.1% who were fully inoculated.

Meanwhile, 6.58 million recipients had received only their first jab so far.

Malaysia has been ramping up its vaccination rate sharply, with an eye on achieving around half a million daily vaccinations in order to meet the government’s accelerated target of immunising the country’s entire population against Covid-19 by October.

New Covid-19 cases, meanwhile, rose to 16,117 yesterday — the second highest daily figure — pushing active cases, which carry high transmission risk, to a new high of 170,224.

The country’s cumulative confirmed Covid-19 infections climbed further to 1.04 million.

The latest cases were detected from the screening of 148,049 individuals in the past 24 hours, indicating a 10.89% positivity rate.

The Klang Valley — comprising Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya — recorded 9,195 infections or 57% of yesterday's cases. Selangor saw 6,616 new cases, while Kuala Lumpur had 2,457 and Putrajaya 122.

Nearly 83% of the Covid-19 patients under categories 3, 4 and 5 reported yesterday had not been vaccinated, said Health director-general (DG) Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Category 3 patients are those with pneumonia, while category 4 patients are those with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy. Category 5 are critical cases requiring assisted ventilation. 

Earlier this month, the Health DG said daily Covid-19 cases are expected to increase as the highly infectious Delta variant had been detected in almost every state.

The variant, which originated from India, can spread faster via airborne transmission and has an infectivity rate of five to eight in R0 value.
