KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 7): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases dropped to 19,257 today after staying above the 20,000 mark for two straight days, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
The latest infections were discovered from 156,457 individuals tested across the country as of noon, indicating a positivity rate of 12.31%.
Another 210 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, lifting the country's total fatalities due to the pandemic to 10,389, said Noor Hisham in a statement.
Of the latest fatalities, 88 deaths were reported in Selangor, followed by 33 in Kuala Lumpur, 28 in Johor, 17 in Kedah, 13 in Sabah, eight in Melaka, six in Perak, five in Negeri Sembilan, five in Kelantan, four in Penang, and one each in Pahang, Sarawak and Perlis.
Despite the fall in new infections, active cases, which carry high transmission risk, continued to climb to 224,120 from 221,396 a day ago.
A total of 1,097 patients were being treated in intensive care units (ICUs), including 575 who needed respiratory assistance.
Daily recoveries at 16,323 continued to lag behind new cases today. Cumulatively, total recoveries increased to 1.01 million versus 1.24 million infections nationwide.
Selangor — the worst hit state — saw the number of new cases dropped to 7,084 after reporting over 8,000 infections for three consecutive days.
Kuala Lumpur, meanwhile, came in second today with 2,450 new cases, followed by Kedah (1,514) and Sabah (1,255).
The Ministry of Health (MoH) also announced 36 new Covid-19 clusters, comprising 18 workplace clusters, 15 community clusters and one each of a education, religious and detention clusters.
To date, 3,899 clusters have been reported nationwide, including 2,702 that have been declared ended.
