KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 11): Malaysia's daily Covid-19 cases breached the 20,000 mark again, with 20,780 new infections reported today — its second-highest daily figure so far — up from 19,991 infections yesterday. The country’s highest number of daily Covid-19 cases on record was 20,889, posted last Friday (Aug 6).

Today's tally marked the third time that Malaysia has logged over 20,000 daily cases. These new infections came from the testing of 143,661 individuals nationwide, indicating a positivity rate of 14.46%.

Following the jump in new cases, and with new recoveries coming in lower at 17,973, active infections climbed further to 233,358, according to a statement from Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Also reported today were 211 Covid-19-related deaths, which raised total fatalities linked to the coronavirus to 11,373 — more than double the 5,254 recorded just over a month ago on July 1.

Of the latest fatalities, 79 deaths were reported in Selangor, 41 in Kuala Lumpur, 21 in Kedah, 16 in Johor, 13 in Sabah, eight in Negeri Sembilan, eight in Terengganu, seven in Penang, seven in Perak, six in Melaka and five in Pahang.

There are now 1,053 Covid-19 patients in intensive care units across the country, including 546 who require breathing assistance.

24.7% of new Covid-19 cases have had a history of vaccination

Dr Noor Hisham said 5,138 or 24.7% of today’s new Covid-19 cases have had a history of vaccination.

Meanwhile, 20,380 or 98.1% of the latest Covid-19 cases came in under Categories 1 (no symptoms) and 2 (mild symptoms), while 400 cases or 1.9% were in Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).

Selangor is still the biggest new infection contributor at 6,921 — down from 7,338 a day ago, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 2,065 infections. States with over 1,000 new infections were: Johor (1,693), Kedah (1,534), Sabah (1,514), Penang (1,385), Kelantan (1,284) and Negeri Sembilan (1,015). The remainder States are Perak (828), Melaka (636), Sarawak (634), Terengganu (613), Pahang (585), Putrajaya (41), Perlis (29) and Labuan (three).

To date, the nation's cumulative Covid-19 infections stood at 1.32 million versus 1.08 million total recoveries.

31 more clusters detected

The Ministry has also detected 31 more Covid-19 infection clusters in the past 24 hours, with a total of 1,274 infections. These comprised 18 workplace clusters, 11 community clusters and two high-risk group clusters.

To date, 4,034 clusters have been reported nationwide, including 2,776 that have been declared ended.
