KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 16): Malaysia’s daily number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered fell to 415,875 yesterday (Aug 15), from 442,150 a day earlier, bringing the nation’s cumulative figure of vaccine shots given to recipients to 27.81 million so far since the vaccination scheme started in February 2021.

According to the latest updates on Twitter today by the country's Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), which cited data from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF), the country had as of yesterday administered at least the first dose to 52.3% of Malaysia's population and the second dose to 32.9% of the population.

Meanwhile, the country’s cumulative number of administered Covid-19 vaccine doses at 27.81 million as of yesterday comprised 17.08 million first shots and 10.73 million second jabs, according to the CITF.

As for the 415,875 vaccine doses administered yesterday, the daily figure comprised 143,671 first jabs and 272,204 second shots.

The Covid-19 vaccination scheme in Malaysia started on Feb 24, 2021, with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin taking the first jab.

Based on the government's target of having 80% of the population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to achieve herd immunity, the country will need to have about 26 million people completing their two-dose vaccination.

Yesterday, 20,546 new Covid-19 cases were reported nationwide, down from 20,670 a day earlier, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

The latest daily figure raised the cumulative number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 1.4 million so far, he added.

According to him, the nation’s cumulative number of Covid-19-linked deaths rose to 12,510 yesterday after 282 more fatalities were reported.

On Saturday (Aug 14), Malaysia reported 260 pandemic-related deaths, Noor Hisham added.
