KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 17): The country’s daily number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered inched up to 501,776 yesterday (Aug 16), from 415,875 the previous day, bringing the total number of vaccine shots given to recipients to 28.31 million so far since the vaccination programme started early this year.

Based on the latest updates on Twitter today by the country’s Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), which cited data from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF), Malaysia had as of yesterday administered the first dose of the vaccine to 52.8% of the country’s population and the second dose to 33.9% of the population.

Among the cumulative 28.31 million vaccine doses administered as of yesterday, 17.25 million were first doses and 11.06 million were second jabs, data from the CITF showed.

As for the 501,776 vaccine doses administered yesterday, the daily figure comprised 175,874 shots for first-dose recipients and 325,902 second jabs.

Based on the government’s target of having 80% of the population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to achieve herd immunity, the country will need to have about 26 million people completing their two-dose vaccination.

Yesterday, 19,740 new Covid-19 cases were reported nationwide, down from 20,546 cases a day earlier. The figure had stayed above the 20,000 mark for five consecutive days.

According to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement yesterday, the latest cases were discovered from 130,113 people tested nationwide, indicating a positivity rate of 15.17%.

Noor Hisham added that active cases stayed above the 200,000 mark for the second consecutive week at 249,277 yesterday — up from 247,261 the day before — as new recoveries came in lower than new infections at 17,450.

Total recoveries stood at 1.16 million from 1.42 million cumulative infections detected so far.
