KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 21): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 infections fell to 22,262 today, from yesterday’s 23,564, raising total cases to date to 1.54 million.

This is the fourth consecutive day that daily infections breached the 20,000 level.

Selangor continues to report the highest number of cases in a day with 7,011, followed by Sabah (2,651) and Sarawak (1,964), said Health Director General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Other states that reported four-digit new cases are Kedah (1,880), Johor (1,558), Penang (1,459), Kuala Lumpur (1,220) and Kelantan (1,039).

Dr Noor Hisham said daily recoveries came in lower than new infections at 18,576, bringing total recoveries to 1.26 million.

Meanwhile, a total of 223 Covid-19 related deaths were reported today.

Selangor accounted for 77 of the fatalities, followed by Sabah (27), Kedah (23),Penang (20), Kuala Lumpur (18), Melaka (18), Johor (14), Negeri Sembilan (11), Perak (7), Pahang (5), Sarawak (2) and Putrajaya (1).

Active cases reach new record high

Dr Noor Hisham said active cases climbed further to 260,880, with 1,035 patients warded in the intensive care unit, including 513 on ventilators.

Of the new cases, 18,734 or 82.5% were patients who either have had no prior history of vaccination or have not completed their two-dose regimen, said the director-general.

Meanwhile, the asymptomatic or with mild symptoms continue to make up the bulk of new cases, with 21,793 or 97.9% being in Categories 1 (no symptoms) and 2 (mild symptoms).

Those with more severe symptoms total 469 or 2.1%, spread across Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).

The total number of Covid-19 tests carried out dropped to 150,346 from yesterday’s 162,473, with a positivity rate of 14.81%. 

According to Dr Noor Hisham, 38 new clusters were identified today, with a total of 1,383 infections.

They comprise 18 workplace clusters, with the remaining comprising community clusters and religious clusters. 

The country has reported 4,418 clusters so far, including 2,983 that have been declared ended — leaving 1,435 active clusters.
