KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): Malaysia reported 22,597 new Covid-19 infections today, a slight increase from yesterday’s 22,070 cases, marking the fifth straight day that the country has reported over 22,000 daily infections since Aug 24.

According to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement, Selangor, the state with the highest number of cases, reported 5,814 new cases, slightly lower than yesterday’s 5,920 cases. Next came Sabah with 2,834 cases — the first decline after four straight days of daily cases topping 3,000 — followed by Sarawak (2,427 cases), Kedah (2,162 cases) and Penang (1,920 cases).

Of the 14 states and federal territories, seven reported less than 1,000 new cases, namely Terengganu (739 cases), Pahang (579 cases), Negeri Sembilan (345 cases), Melaka (269 cases), Perlis (98 cases), Putrajaya (48 cases) and Labuan (five cases).

Also reported today were 252 deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities linked to the coronavirus in the country to 15,802. Of the new deaths, 91 were reported in Selangor, 46 in Johor, 26 in Kuala Lumpur, 18 in Kedah, 17 each in Sabah and Penang, 13 in Malacca, seven in Perak, six in Pahang, five in Sarawak, three in Negeri Sembilan, two in Kelantan and one in Perlis.

Active cases climb to 268,548

Active cases — meaning those with high transmission risks — rose to 268,548 from 265,695 yesterday, as daily recoveries at 19,492 lag new infections. Of the total 1.69 million Covid-19 cases detected in the country so far, 1.4 million or 82.8% have recovered.

Meanwhile, 17,345 cases or 76.8% of the new infections today were patients who either were not vaccinated or had received only one dose, according to Dr Noor Hisham.

Nonetheless, the asymptomatic or those with mild symptoms continued to make up the bulk of new cases, with 22,129 or 97.9% being in Categories 1 (no symptoms) or 2 (mild symptoms). Those with more severe symptoms totalled 468 or 2.1%, spread across Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).

Currently, 986 patients are being treated in intensive care units, of which 451 cases require respiratory assistance.

36 new clusters detected, with 23 workplace clusters contributing 69% of 1,450 total infections

The Health Ministry said 36 new clusters have been identified today, with 1,450 infections among them.

They comprise 23 workplace clusters — which contributed 1,002 cases or 69% of total infections under the new clusters — 12 community clusters (391), and one high-risk group cluster (57). The country has reported 4,647 clusters so far, including 3,179 that have been declared ended — leaving 1,468 active clusters.
