COPENHAGEN (Aug 30): As food wastage has become a major topical debate over the years, a supermarket in Copenhagen, Denmark has taken the initiative to stop food wastage by reselling food products beyond their expiry dates at lower prices.

WeFood is a charity project launched in 2016 where local producers and supermarket retailers donate their food surplus way past the expiry dates to the organisation. These products will then be tested by a group of volunteers in making sure that the products are safe for consumption before being put on sale at much lower prices - 10% to 50% of its original price. The two-pronged effort means not only are customers able to support the fight against food wastage, they are also able to spend less.

This initiative has also received the support from the Danish government where the rules governing the resale of goods past their use-by dates has been approved.

A third of the food produced around the world ends up in our garbage bins before it can be consumed. Every second, this equates to over 41 tonnes of binned food or 1.3 billion tonnes each year, according to Energy Observer's report.

The global food waste emits some 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2 per year at an estimated value of 750 billion dollars - making the initiative to curb food waste an environmental cause as well.
