“Certainly the venture into digital space opens up new markets and possibilities for Sunway Malls. We are not time and geographical bound,” he said.

With seven malls under the Sunway Malls’ belt, the online platform will amalgamate the physical malls into one digital mall, therefore tallying up the number into a total of eight malls.

“Sunway eMall will complement our current combined 4.5 million sqft of physical retail space of seven malls. It amalgamated our seven physical malls presence into one digital mall. Through this exercise, Sunway Malls portfolio has also grown to eight malls. - physically and digitally,”

An initial 200 merchants with 30,000 stock keeping units (SKU)  including  brands from Sony, Huawei, Sketchers, Li Ning, Braun Buffel, Aldo, L’Occitane, Charity Ng, Hooga and among others have agreed to join the digital mall.

It is expected that 500 merchants with 100,000 SKUs will be in the eMall over the next 18 months.

Besides creating an online presence for Sunway Malls, the group is also looking at the effort as insurance and contingency against unforeseen geographical or retail sub-sectors lockdown.

The action taken by Sunway Malls is a result impacted by the acceleration caused by the pandemic where e-commerce has gained traction with 70 million people have transited to online shopping in six southeast asian countries, according to a report by Facebook and Bain & Company.

It is projected that Southeast Asia’s ecommerce sales will grow 14% per year over the next five years with 380 million online shoppers by 2026.
