New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia rise to 6,630 on Oct 22

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22): New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia rose to 6,630 on Friday (Oct 22) — up 420 cases from 6,210 reported a day earlier — the second consecutive day the country’s daily infections climbed above the 6,000 mark.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the total, only 15 were imported cases while the rest (6,615 cases) originated from local transmissions.

According to his statement, the bulk of new infections or 6,529 cases (98.5%) were in Categories 1 and 2, which were either asymptomatic or displayed mild symptoms.

The remaining 101 cases (1.5%) were in Categories 3, 4 and 5.

There are 653 patients being treated in intensive care units (ICUs), of which 132 are suspected, probable or under investigation for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, 332 patients need ventilators to help them breathe, including 230 who are confirmed to be positive for Covid-19.

On a happier note, Dr Noor Hisham said 7,630 patients had recovered from Covid-19 as of noon on Friday. Total recoveries in the country so far increased to 2,311,213 against 2,420,222 total Covid-19 infections.

12 new clusters identified

Six out of the 12 new clusters that were identified in the past 24 hours were workplace clusters, detected in Johor, Melaka, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

The remaining were three education clusters, two community clusters and one religious cluster.

To date, 5,717 clusters have been reported across the country including 5,137 that have been declared ended.
