PUTRAJAYA (Nov 15): The prosecution on Monday (Nov 15) said they would not be calling former banker Tan Sri Nazir Razak to possibly testify in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial involving his eldest brother and former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak despite revelations in Nazir's book "What's in a Name" that came out this month.

Lead prosecutor Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram when met outside after Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's appeal case in the Court of Appeal, said the prosecution would not call Najib's younger brother.

“Our case is what we said in the opening statement of the trial — that Najib acted in concert with fugitive [businessman] Low Taek Jho (Jho Low). Jho Low was his alter ego. In truth, Jho Low was the accused's mirror image.

“That is the prosecution's case [and we have no intention of calling Nazir],” Sri Ram said.

The former Federal Court judge was asked about the possibility of the prosecution calling Najib's youngest sibling following the book's publication.

Sri Ram is the senior deputy public prosecutor that leads the prosecution team, which is almost the same as in Rosmah's graft trial.

The 1MDB-Tanore trial resumes on Monday afternoon in the High Court before Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah.

Former 1MDB chief financial officer Azmi Tahir will be continuing his testimony for the prosecution as its 12th witness after the cross-examination of former chief executive officer Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman was concluded last Wednesday after 24 days on the witness stand.

Nazir in his book wrote about 1MDB, where it was described how he met former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad with The Edge owner Tan Sri Tong Kooi Ong in London to inform Dr Mahathir of the billions that were missing from 1MDB.

As written in the excerpt of the book that was published in The Malaysian Reserve, Dr Mahathir asked Nazir that why the latter approached him to do something even though he had already retired.

“Well, sir, you have to do something because you made him the PM,” Nazir was reported to have said.
