397 areas in Klang Valley face water cuts after road accident pollutes river

PETALING JAYA (Aug 11): Residents of 397 areas in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur are enduring another round of water disruption after a highway accident caused the pollution of Pahang’s Sungai Semantan today.

According to a statement from Air Selangor, the accident occurred along km75.9 of the Karak-Bentong highway towards Kuala Lumpur.

The ensuing chemical pollution in the river forced a halt to operations of the Langat 2 water treatment plant at 4.30am.

Air Selangor said residents in 172 areas in Kuala Lumpur and 222 in Hulu Langat and three in Petaling Jaya will experience water cuts from 10am today.  

It added the Langat 2 plant is expected to resume operations at 3.30pm today, with water to be restored to consumers in stages once its system stabilises.

Meanwhile water tankers will be mobilised, with critical premises prioritised and every measure was being taken to minimise the impact on users, said Air Selangor.

"Further updates on the incident will be available from time to time on all media platforms.
