Kajang Municipal Council targets illegal structures

KAJANG (Aug 26): The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) has warned that it “would not hesitate to take action” against property owners who build structures on common areas.

MPKj president Najmuddin Jemain (pictured) told The Star that an example of this is Kasawari Apartment, Seri Kembangan, where more than 40 units had been illegally renovated.

“Among the offences committed by the owners under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 were putting up awnings for parking and fences in common areas, building garages and stores as well as extending their homes into common areas.

“The owners are required to ensure that any renovation and repairs do not inconvenience or pose a danger to others,” Najmuddin told the daily during the council’s full board meeting recently.

He reminded owners not to carry out any renovation to their parcel until they obtain approval from “the management body, and when necessary, from the local authority”.

“MPKj will look at the legal aspects as a whole and not just the Strata Management Act 2013 when dealing with owners who build illegal structures, as this is a matter of public interest.”

MPKj has already issued compounds and notices to several owners at Kasawari Apartment.

The daily also reported that the council can take further action by demolishing the illegal structures.

Najmuddin called on joint management bodies and management corporations “to be vigilant in ensuring owners abide by the rules”.
