Sarkunan SubramaniamKUALA LUMPUR (Oct 6): The Malaysian Institute of Professional Property Managers (MIPPM) is organising its inaugural conference entitled "Towards 1st Class Property Management" on Oct 19.

It is an effort to bring the property management industry in Malaysia to another level, said president of MIPPM Sarkunan Subramaniam.

The conference will be held on Oct 19 at Connexion @ Nexus, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur, he told reporters at a press conference today. “This is the inaugural conference of MIPPM and it will become our annual signature event in the future.”

The conference is supported by the Board of Valuers, Appraisers and Estate Agents (BOVAEA), the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) and the Association of Valuers, Property Managers, Estate Agents and Property Consultants in the Private Sector Malaysia (PEPS).

Sarkunan, who is also the managing director of Knight Frank Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Knight Frank Malaysia), said the conference will discuss topics on the strata management tribunal; effective management of service contracts and providers; issues and challenges in managing green buildings, facilities; management versus property management; and the latest trends and developments in property management.

The speakers will include principal of Pretam Singh Nor & Co Datuk Pretam Singh, Sunway Group Bhd property investment division general manager Julian Cheng Jew Keng, Knight Frank Malaysia property management executive director Matthias Loui, ExaStrata Solutions Sdn Bhd chief real estate consultant Adzman Shah Mohd Ariffin and  president of Valuation and General Practice of the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers Lim Lan Yuan, who is also the president of the Association of Property and Facility Managers.

“There are so many issues plaguing the industry, including poor standards of property management, people running away with service charges and property management companies that don’t quite perform,” said Sarkunan.

“In addition, more people are living in strata properties now so the industry has to do something in order to address these issues”, he added.

Sarkunan urged property managers to change their mindset to acquire first class knowledge and skills to manage the first class assets in Malaysia. “That’s what this conference is all about, bringing knowledge together to impart skills and steer Malaysia towards 1st class management.”

The conference has secured over 100 participants to date, he said, adding that MIPPM is hoping the number will reach at least 150. “The participants we’re targeting are property managers, housing developers, valuers, lawyers, etc.”
